Friday Foxer #35

The “col” in fridayfoxercol.jpg is short for collaboration. Although today’s co-op puzzle has been executed by Roman, it owe its theme and the majority of its components to guest foxer setter Colonel_K.

The honeycomb below is a fancy form of wordsearch in which every cell is used, and words can curl and zigzag but never overlap. Each hive foxer has a theme (some past ones: gloves, mazes, earthquakes, and The 39 Steps). Identifying the theme is a vital part of the defoxing process. Colonel_K’s ‘double-bubble’ puzzle is composed of 29 answers.

  1. Just having a quick look now, if Philosopher’s is correct then that leaves an eme, which is…

    V1 CREME

    .. for EGG.

    Also goes with Monotreme 🙂

    Makes:

    T12 VIRGIN BOY

  2. In other news, this puzzle is too big for my MS Snip program and I have to get up early, so off to bed rather than solve it all now. I shall return over the weekend when the other eager beavers will have solved the rest :).

  3. Theme = EGG
    V1 – CREME
Y1 – GUDETAMA (can be translated to English as “lazy egg”)
    Y2 – TEMPERA (PAINT)
    S8 – IVO ROBOTNIK (EGGMAN)
V6 – GOODPASTURE (he invented methods for growing viruses and rickettsiae in chicken embryos and fertilized chicken eggs)
    Y3 – PYSANKA (DECORATED EGG)
T6 – CANDLING (method used in embryology to study the growth and development of an embryo inside an egg)
    X1 – MONOTREME
    T1 – VIRGIN BOY
    R11 – ADVOCAAT
    O7 – KINDER SURPRISE
    O9 – CLOWN (REGISTER)

    Maybe:
R6 – TAMAGO (Egg in Japanese)
S5 – SUN WUKONG (Monkey King from Journey to the West. When the wind blows on the egg, it turns into a stone monkey that can already crawl and walk)

  4. J7 – JOURDAIN SOCIETY (its aims being ‘the advancement of the science of oology’)
    Then G13 – CURATE’S

  5. With G4 or H4 CHUCKIE, then we could have :
    B1 – PACE

Also, I wonder if in G2, we could have SHOCK (for Shock Egg). But the C and the O are not in the correct position for that word.

If Tim comes by, could you please let us know if we are on the right track?

  6. This is what I think we’ve got:

    PYSANKA
    GOODPASTURE
    MONOTREME
    TEMPERA
    GUDETAMA
    CREME
    PHILOSOPHERS
    CANDLING
    ADVOCAAT
    VIRGIN BOY

    IVO ROBOTNIK
    TAMAGOTCHI
    SUN WUKONG
    KINDER SURPRISE
    CLOWN
    TIMER
    COLUMBUS
    OEUF
    KOSCHEI
    CHUCKIE

    FABERGE
    SCOTCH
    DEATH
    PACE
    JOURDAIN SOCIETY
    CURATES
    DEVILLED

But if I’m right, all that mess at the top right is only two answers…

  7. And the last one is E6 – HEINZ WOLFF, best known for the BBC television series The Great Egg Race.
    So that’s a wrap!
