Solo Foxer #11

Unlike the formidable Friday foxers, the Monday kind are designed with lone truth sleuths in mind. Roman, my Chief Foxer Setter, assures me the following brainteaser can be solved single-handedly. Crow all you like in the comments section, but please don’t spoil the puzzle for others by sharing solutions or dropping hints.

“Where am I?”

Using the following clues (the map above is purely decorative) in combination with Street View, Wikipedia, MAPfrappe and other tools, work out my location. The answer will appear under next Monday’s solo foxer.

I’m standing beside an orange Mercedes-Benz Sprinter truck on a rough, single track road. The driver of the truck and five of his workmates are sitting on the grass nearby, having a canalside picnic. Within two furlongs of my location there’s a four-lane bridge, a desiccated lake, and a football pitch. I’m about two kilometres NE of a giant pentagram. The city I’m in has a population of over a million. The country you’re looking for produces more potatoes than Ireland, more gold than India, and more tobacco than Hungary. Its highest value bank note is worth around 50 Euro. One neighbouring nation uses a different railway track gauge. Another has more than seven stars on its flag. I share latitude with a sizeable US city named after an animal and a sizeable US city that’s home to a presidential museum. I’m not in Pont-à-Mousson.
