Friday Foxer #132

This week’s handmade co-op puzzle won’t defox itself. If you’re a dab hand at quizzes, lateral thinking, and search engine sleuthing, why not help out.

Roman is feeling nostalgic. ID the collage theme and explain the presence of all fifteen components to complete the defox.

  1. Bottom right corner: RONI – Olympic mascot of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, created by Don Moss; the mascot is a raccoon

ETA: Coat of Arms, lower centre: Veliky Novgorod
(Throne with really nice, plump cushion; candles; bear each side; all above some fish)

  2. The plate (/bowl?) in the bottom left corner looks to have a White Star Line marking in the centre. I’ve got no further so far.

  3. I think the artillery piece is a Russian WW2 280mm mortar M1939 (Br-5)
(The picture on the Wikipedia page doesn’t have the necessary level of detail).

  4. I think the link might be missing-man-of-the-moment / I wouldn’t like to be in his shoes Yevgeny Prigozhin.

    1. USA/Germany Concord stamp – network of Concord companies in which Yevgeny has an interest: Concord Management & Consulting, Concord Catering…

    2. Chef game – (used to be) sometimes called “Putin’s chef”

    3. Falklands stamp “Protector” – ?

    4. (unidentified shortcut icon)

    5. Br-4 “Stalin’s sledgehammer” – weapon used in recorded killing of Wagner deserter, which Yevgeny praised

    6. Sepoy Mutiny chits – two week old news

    7. (unidentified girl with moped)

    8. Gamayun / Swan Maiden – ?

    9. Dysentery – “alleged that Prigozhin was linked to a company called Moskovsky Shkolnik (Moscow schoolboy) that had supplied poor quality food to Moscow schools, which had caused a 2019 dysentery outbreak.”

    10. Cross-country Roni – sport of his step-father, and one he wanted to continue until injured

    11. Veliky Novgorod – “In 1979, 18-year-old Prigozhin was caught stealing and was given a suspended sentence of two years and six months in prison. He served his sentence working at a chemical plant in Veliky Novgorod.”

    12. (unidentified commando)

    13. Central African Republic – Wagner’s interest; “In July 2018, three Russian journalists working for a news organization often critical of the Russian government were murdered in the Central African Republic, where they had been attempting to investigate the activities of the Wagner Group in that country.”

    14. (unidentified early fantasy cover art?)

    15. Second class soup bowl from SS Afric – ?

    • 15. SS Afric – “The Association for Free Research and International Cooperation (AFRIC) has served as a front for Prigozhin’s influence operations in Africa.” – US Treasury Dept., 2021

      8. Gamayun Tales by Alexander Utkin – Dmitry Utkin, who was once head of security for Prigozhin, led Wagner. Listed as director general of Prigozhin’s Concord Management; in charge of Prigozhin’s food businesses ??

    • 12. The commando is from the cover of Commando, Issue 5234 “Marked Man”
(96 issues per yearly subscription still being put out!)
(I’m sure Putin and the FSB will let bygones be bygones).
