Friday Foxer #1

Every Friday at 1300 hours, Tally-Ho Corner’s cleverest clogs come together to solve a ‘foxer’ handcrafted by my sadistic chum and colleague, Roman. A complete ‘defoxing’ sometimes takes several days and usually involves the little grey cells of many readers. Don’t be shy. All are welcome to participate.

Below is a list of ‘40 things wot hit the headlines in 2020’ (‘things’ is used in its broadest possible sense). Entries have been stripped of vowels and numbers and had any inter-word spaces repositioned*. For example, if George Floyd was present he might appear as GRGFLY D. Lockdown would be LCKDWN.

*Hyphens are treated as spaces. Apostrophes are ignored.

  1. 4 – Bong Joon-ho (winner of the Oscars for Best Director and Best Film for Parasite)
5 – Barnards Castle (scenic location ideal for validating fitness to drive distance)
6 – Crew Dragon (successful launch of SpaceX rocket that includes a crew module for manned space flight)

8 – R Number (describes the transmission rate of a virus; in 2020 this invariably meant COVID-19)

12 – Zombie Mabinogi (but I have no idea how, why or whether this is 2020 news)
13 – Joking Rug (probably not, sorry)
14 – Svetlana Tikhanovskaya (Byelarus opposition leader, forced to flee the country when her election proved only slightly less corrupt than the November one in the US)

16 – Locust Crisis (a plague hit Africa midway through the year)
17 – Quasem Soleinami (assassinated by drone attack)
18 – Blue Shift (the tendency for post-election dates in the US to shift a race towards the Democrats, even in the absence of repeated, widespread and obvious fraud)
19 – Galway Valley (site of sadly fatal clashes between India and China)
20 – Banana (Not because it made the news but because if Tim doesn’t like bananas, Roman surely will)

22 – Chuck Yeager (sadly no longer with us)

25 – Clap for Our Carers (a horrific and noisy social credit earning display of obsequience to lucky people in full-time employment creating tik-tok videos)
26 – Coral Skyscraper (a rather tall coral growth was discovered in the Great Barrier Reef)

30 – Captain Tom (raised money for the NHS by walking in his back garden)

36 – Kobe Bean Bryant (died in helicopter crash)

40 – free of swears precludes my certainty that the missing vowels are ‘u’ and ‘ea’.
