G is for Grim great-grandparents game. Sound effects are used to great effect in Onthecht, a short but powerful offering by a Dutch dev whose great-grandparents were among the hundreds of thousands of Jews murdered at Sobibor.
H is for Heart-warming Holmes and Watson adventure
By the time Conan Doyle penned The Adventure of the Three Garridebs he was nearing the bottom of his plot barrel (There are striking similarities between 3GAR and another Case-Book tale, The Adventure of the Three Gables). However, what the 1924 story lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in climactic drama and emotion. By the sound of it, any Sherlockian that enjoyed Holmes’ touching outburst at the end of 3GAR, should adore The Beekeeper’s Picnic, a £12 point-and-click adventure coded, illustrated, and written, by the talented Helen Greetham.
I is for Intriguing concept
The Steam blurb…
“Take part in a massive, ongoing conflict that evolves with every skirmish and battle. Set in the historical region of Alessandria in Northern Italy, players will fight for control of key locations, pushing the frontlines and changing the tides of war with every victory and defeat. Future plans include expanding the map to cover the full breadth of the Napoleonic campaigns, from Paris to Moscow.”
…makes free, persistent PvP wargame Kings of Emperor Bonaparte sound really interesting. Hopefully, the game’s sleepy forum isn’t a sign that I’ll find stagnant frontlines and lifeless lobbies when I eventually get round to giving it a go.
J is for Jarring trailer
German publisher Astragon, is eyeing the wet bit of Simulatia currently dominated by NAUTIS Home and Ships At Sea. Unlike long-lost Ship Simulator, ‘coming soon’ Seafarer: The Ship Sim won’t include facsimiles of real harbours and sea lanes. Career-conscious captains will criss-cross one large fictional map “inspired by North European seascapes”.
K is for Kill or be killed
Turning off the minimap, the ammo display, and health regeneration, and reducing starting health and outlaw aim times, does wonders for tension in Wild West gunfight FPS Sharpshooter. The free base game showcases deep customisability and a clever venue generator, but only includes revolvers. You’ll need to purchase the £8.50 supporter pack in order to slay with scatterguns, carbines, bows, and Gatling guns. If said pack also offered slightly livelier foes, some rural locales, and a hint of story, I’d probably take the plunge.
The most jarring part of the Seafarer trailer is the narrator’s accent. Dick Van Dyke, but this time from Boston?
