Friday Foxer #36

Every Friday at 1300 hours, Tally-Ho Corner’s cleverest clogs come together to solve a ‘foxer’ handcrafted by my sadistic chum and colleague, Roman. A complete ‘defoxing’ sometimes takes several days and usually involves the little grey cells of many readers. Don’t be shy. All are welcome to participate.

Below is a list of ‘33 Things wot Rotate, Revolve, or Spin’ (‘things’ is used in its broadest possible sense). Entries have been stripped of vowels and numbers and have had any inter-word spaces repositioned*. For example, if drill bit was present it might appear as DR LLBT. Waltzer would be WLTZR.

*Hyphens are treated as spaces. Apostrophes are ignored.

  3. 19. PASTA MILL ?

‘Mill’ seems a sensible answer, but in association with ‘Pasta’ you’d probably use machine or maker.

    24. HUMAN CENTRIFUGE – for exposing people to high G-forces.

  4. 26. ANITA WLODARCZYK – Polish hammer thrower

Number of vowels that needed adding: 3 in Anita, 2 in Włodarczyk

  5. 5. IXION – king of the Lapiths

“Zeus ordered Hermes to bind Ixion to a winged fiery wheel that was always spinning. Therefore, Ixion was bound to a burning solar wheel for all eternity, […] spinning across the heavens”

    Remaining are:
    1. Something to do with a spinning top? Or a Jet from those sprinklers?

    4. Something related to the Disco Ball?

    9.

    16.

    23.

    31. A better answer than Rope?

    • 1. TIP JET?
“nozzle at the tip of some helicopter rotor blades, used to spin the rotor, much like a Catherine wheel firework.”

      4. Truly is disco related: MINIE BALL – works in conjuction with rifling for better accuracy and range

  6. This is a bit tenuous, but here goes: 23. LADY SIBELL

    https://hrpprodsa.blob.core.windows.net/hrp-prod-container/11045/ghosts-at-hampton-court-palace.pdf

Sibell Penn and ‘The Lady in Grey’
Sibell Penn was nurse to Prince Edward, Henry VIII’s only son … Sibell Penn’s remains were disturbed and it is said that she returned to the rooms she inhabited during her time at Hampton Court Palace. The sound of a SPINNING wheel could be heard from behind a wall in the south-west wing of the palace shortly afterwards. When the wall was demolished, a small forgotten room was found, containing an old spinning wheel. Sibell Penn is the most persistent ghost at Hampton Court Palace. There have been sightings as recently as 1986 when a ‘lady in grey’ was reportedly seen in various Tudor courtyards and cloisters.

EDIT: ignore me, I just saw Electric Dragon’s far more plausible answer.

    • EUROPA (moon of Jupiter)? Has an orbital period of 3.551181 days and is tidally locked, so it rotates about it’s own axis in the same period of time.

Jeez. I had a strong back-to-school feeling getting my head around that.
