Panzer III (Three new tank games trundling in our direction)

As strong, original tank sim names are hard to come by nowadays, and many of Spearhead 2’s potential customers probably won’t be old enough to remember that Spearhead 1 wasn’t up to much, perhaps MicroProse’s latest choice of title isn’t as questionable as it first appears.

“Coming soon” Spearhead 2 looks like it wants a piece of GHPC’s pie.

Clickable 3D interiors, destructible scenery, and a choice of theatres could help it secure a modest slice.

Another upcoming tank game with a partially recycled moniker is Call to Arms: Panzer Elite. Seemingly geared towards third-person play (first-person gun sight views will be available), unfortunately, this Digitalmindsoft project looks to have more in common with Panzer Elite: Action than Wings Simulations’ classic.

The Steam screenshots suggest long shots and long sight lines will be rarities.

In addition to featuring some atrocious Tiger tank gunnery and a hopelessly lost monarch butterfly, the above teaser includes an anachronism found in far too many WW2 games. Devs, back in 1944 there was as much chance of encountering a Leopard 2 in a Normandy field as a round straw bale!

Although Sprocket’s tank design tools have improved dramatically in the four years since the game entered Early Access, fans still can’t test their creations in multiplayer arenas. Ramshackle, a rival project a few weeks away from Steam, will, by all accounts, offer PVP skirmishes from the outset.

  1. “Clickable 3D interiors” – That was missing in GHPC and is an essential element for me when it comes to a tank sim. Always dreamed of a modern tank sim with detailed, immersive interiors like in DCS. Hopefully they do a Leopard 2 variant too. Some effects in the trailer seem a little too “over the top”…

    • Well if you’re looking for 3D interiors, after much trepidation over the price and DRM, I finally took the plunge on Steel Beasts and have absolutely adored it.

  2. Looking for Spearhead 2 to review the Steam page and maybe add it to my wishlist I found multiple options!

SPEARHEAD a 2022 topdown twin stick shooter. Looks terrible but reviews are very positive.
Spearhead, ‘Coming soon’, looks like it’s the 1998 original mentioned being introduced to Steam.
Spearhead 2, ‘Coming soon’, same publisher (Microprose), same Franchise (Spearhead), different developer.

It does look promising but I’m wary of “Built for Co-op Warfare”.

I’m deterred by the people behind Call to Arms: Panzer Elite. The Call to Arms franchise is very popular but this looks like it’s going to be an armoured vehicle focused addition to the franchise and the gameplay/campaigns just haven’t previously drawn me in.

  3. Some neat looking games on the horizon!

As an aside, would it be possible to add Previous Post/Next Post buttons to articles on the site? I like to pick up from the last time I was here but having to go back and forth between the index and posts makes me get lost sometime 😵‍💫 If it’s too much of a hassle, forget I mentioned it!
