The title of this Doomy demo-equipped Spanish Civil War FPS is great but not strictly true. Franco’s pixelated minions can also be stopped with bayonet, rifle grenade, flamethrower, and bundled dynamite.
In the demo at least, things start in a vaguely historical manner. The first foes encountered are guard dogs and pistol-toting sentries. Only Lead Can Stop Them waits a few minutes before revealing its batshit side. Only when caped ‘Capirotes’ start slinging sorcerous skulls at you, and vampire bats begin flapping in your direction, is it absolutely clear that this is no po-faced Homage to Catalonia homage.
FPS duffer? Warcry Interactive isn’t out to judge or frustrate you. Because the ‘easy’ difficulty option lives up to its name, and cheats such as ‘all weapons’ are just a click away, it’s highly unlikely you’ll find yourself reaching for F9 every few seconds while playing.
Naturally, the hero can recover health by munching on Seville oranges and Serrano ham, and pressing the spacebar next to cracked or mistextured walls sometimes pays dividends. Hate having to potshot scurrying rats while FPSing? You’ll appreciate OLCST’s harmless rodents. Barbed wire is more dangerous than vermin in this memorable oddity.
Some still have much difficulty coping with the 1st April 1939, apparently.
