Every Friday at 1300 hours, Tally-Ho Corner’s cleverest clogs come together to solve a ‘foxer’ handcrafted by my sadistic chum and colleague, Roman. A complete ‘defoxing’ sometimes takes several days and usually involves the little grey cells of many readers. Don’t be shy. All are welcome to participate.
The honeycomb below is a fancy form of wordsearch in which every cell is used, and words can curl and zigzag but never overlap. Each hive foxer has a theme (some past ones: elephants, earthquakes, Egypt…). Identifying the theme is a vital part of the defoxing process. Today’s puzzle is composed of 18 answers.

Lets get the red herrings out of the way 😀
B3 YULE
D6 HAPPY
E3 CHRISTMAS
E9 MUEZZIN
L5 – FREUD
J1. SNOG
H10 TINIAN (island in the Northern Marianas, of Enola Gay fame)
…E3 CHRISTMAS is also an island
Thought illustrators for a bit with GOREY, DORE and BLAKE
Also, there is ‘The Rock’ in the middle 🙂
F2 – LACONIC?
I shall stop for now with some very christmassy answers:
E1 – ANTICHRIST
C1 – LONGPIG (What cannibals called human meat)
G1 – COAL (The best christmas present!)
G3 GERUDO (female pirates in The Legend of Zelda series)
Seasons Greetings, Foxers and Defoxers.
Thanks to Roman for a year of unsung effort, and others who have contributed Foxers to challenge the grey matter during the most recent circum-navigation of the sun.
Seconded. Many thanks to Roman for all the brain-tickling, and a very happy festive season to all my fellow loiterers on the Tally Ho Corner!
Thanks to Roman and Tim for the Weekly Foxers! I wish to everyone a Happy Christmas and Great New Year Eve !!
Few suggestion:
C6 – PLANT
D6 – HILL
H4 or F5 – GUNTHER
L7 – KOALA
Could we have an Australian Theme?
Footling about in the bottom left corner, I can make:
K3. GORGON(s) + K4. DREY (a squirrel’s nest)
or
L1. OGRE(s) + K3. GROAN(s)
or
M1/K3. GOONS
For non-specific words, there’s H9. BLACK
And missing off the almost Christmas list J3. HEROD
One answer down, seventeen to go. Roman says the theme was partially identified on Christmas Eve.
That one is tricky. Among the theme, we could have Christmas Season, Islam, psychoanalyst, islands, illustrators, cannibalism and Christmas Gift/Present. But none of them seems to fit.
I would keep looking tomorrow.
K4 DREYFUS – but I can’t see that he matches any mentioned theme!
If the theme has been mentioned, however obliquely, rather than just having a relevant word, I think we’re down to islands, nuclear things, illustrators, cannibals, meat, pirates…
Does any of that help? No. 😀
Two answers down, sixteen to go.
Alfred Dreyfus was originally sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island.
If the theme _is_ Tropical Islands, which of the two answers given so far (Christmas or Tinian) is correct?
D8. PAPILLON
‘Devil’s Island’ or ‘Island prisons’? Not spotted St Helena, Elba or Robben or even Riker’s yet.
C4. DRY GUILLOTINE
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_Guillotine
Prisoner slang for Devil’s Island and title of book by former prisoner #46,635, René Belbenoît.
K6. Charles DERUDIO
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_DeRudio
A life story too awesome for film: Italian aristocrat, took part in attempted assassination of Napoleon III, escaped Devil’s Island, fought in American Civil War and at Little Bighorn.
(Still not sure what the first correct answer was).
If it’s island prisons more generally then THE ROCK would be a possibility – any more Alcatraz about?
(Also D6 HAGRID – is Azkaban an island prison??)
C3 PINCHGUT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Denison
Now we’re on to something 🙂
G2 OCALAN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_%C3%96calan
‘From 1999 until 2009, he was the sole prisoner in İmralı prison in the Sea of Marmara, where he is still held’
Well then, the answer in the bottom left probably is K3. GORGONA (aka Colombia’s Alcatraz)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorgona_Island_(Colombia)
As to Azkaban being an island, apparently it’s “in the middle of the North Sea”.
GTG as it’s Only Connect time, but there were some nasty Russian/Soviet ones to look up afterwards; plenty of cannibals.
See you after Only Connect 😀
E7 STROUD, surname of the Birdman
L7 KAALA PANI https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_Jail (or possibly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaalapani the film)
D9. PYATAK – Russian facility on Ognenny Ostrov (Fire Island)
(not one of those I was thinking of, as that’s the Nazino Tragedy)
Isolates A3. LEGO !?
Lego Prison Island 60130, part of the City set?
https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/prison-island-60130
13 down, 5 to go – I think.
H1 BASTOY https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bast%C3%B8y_Prison
I5 ANGLIN – name of two prisoners who made an escape attempt from Alcatraz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_1962_Alcatraz_escape_attempt
Looks like it _is_ The Rock, starting at i4.
H11. Alija IZETBEGOVIC – former President of Bosnia-Herzegovina, imprisoned on Goli Otok
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goli_Otok
Woah! That was fast !!
So last two should be:
G12 – Edmond DANTES from The Count of Monte Cristo, which was imprisoned in Chateau d’If
F10 – Jacob ZUMA, South African politician imprisoned on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela
Full list looks like:
A3 – LEGO
C3 – PINCHGUT
C4 – DRY GUILLOTINE
D6 – HAGRID
D8 – PAPILLON
D9 – PYATAK
E7 – STROUD
F10 – ZUMA
G2 – OCALAN
G12 – DANTES
H1 – BASTOY
H11 – IZETBEGOVIC
I4 – THE ROCK
I5 – ANGLIN
K3 – GORGONA
K4 – DREYFUS
K6 – DERUDIO
L7 – KAALA PANI
That’s it !!
