Friday Foxer #18

Every Friday at 1300 hours, Tally-Ho Corner’s cleverest clogs come together to solve a ‘foxer’ handcrafted by my sadistic chum and colleague, Roman. A complete ‘defoxing’ sometimes takes several days and usually involves the little grey cells of many readers. Don’t be shy. All are welcome to participate.

Roman relaxes by planning imaginary journeys using old railway timetables, making Napoleonic figurines from coloured pipe cleaners, and by doing jigsaw puzzles. His current table monopoliser collages dozens of board game box lids. Here’s a selection of pieces from it. Identify all 36 games to complete the defox.

  1. Having failed to find Ticket to Ride, I might be out 🙂

(I really do plan imaginary journeys, though, or at least hypothetical ones. Not always with out of date timetables, although sometimes…)

  2. Spent the morning looking at a house and then had pizza and beer for lunch, need to work! Good luck!

  3. Re: C4
I’m getting visions of Ben Hur with the dolphins that are turned down to count the laps in the Chariot race – those might be useful keywords, or Circus Maximus as the location.

    Gotta go for a bit.

    • Indeed, C4 is CHARIOT RACE by Pegasus

      ETA:
While I’m here, B3 is THE DEVIL’S CAULDRON: The Battles for Arnhem and Nijmegen

  4. C1: OPEN FIRE: Solitaire Tank Combat in WWII (1988)

I’d have described A5 as an Askari, probably serving with the Italians (recruited in Eritrea and Somalia).

    • A4: CALICO (2020)

A5: LION OF JUDAH: The War for Ethiopia, 1935-1941 (2017)

D5: GAME OF TROUBLESOME PIGS (1900)

      Left undefoxed to this point:
      a1, f1
      b2
      d3, f3
      b4, f4
      b5, e5, f5
      b6, e6, f6

  5. F3: SEAWOLF: A Game of Submarine Combat (1979)

F1 apparently shows a Messerschmitt Me 264, and so it proves –
AMERIKA BOMBER: Evil Queen of the Skies (2020)

  6. B6: COBRA: Game of the Normandy Breakout (1977)

Regarding A1 – I think it’s an early model of Rolls-Royce Armoured Car (pre-1924 pattern), and can imagine it might be Lawrence of Arabia with the binoculars, launching an assault on a Turkish train.

      • I’m probably not going to get it. Ireland would probably qualify as being a long, long way away, but somehow I feel it’s not that.

Iraq is not a long way from Turkey, but does have a history of armoured car antics (for instance Habbaniya, 1941 – the artwork by Stuart Brown of this oozes THC jigsaw contender).

So I guess it must be the Indian sub-continent despite sporting the wrong sort of turret (it ought to be domed with 4 MGs in ball mounts), or, in a small outside possibility, East Africa somewhere. So far, the keyword that would unlock this eludes me.
