2025’s communal Combat Mission game begins on Friday. Probably.

If there are no posts on THC on Wednesday or Thursday this week don’t blame Corsica 1764, Ground of Aces, or the first Strategic Command WWII: War in the Pacific expansion. The lull is probably because I’m busy preparing this year’s communal Combat Mission scenario. Having burnt my fingers experimenting with ambitious PvP variants for the past couple of years, I’ve decided to return to a more traditional PvE format for the coming hostilities.

As scripting CMx2 scenarios is not for the perturbable, and I’ve recently been reminded of why CMBO enraptured so many, including myself, in the early Noughties, there’s a good chance the venue for 2025’s play-by-comment co-op marathon will be somewhere in Western Europe, the dateline late 1944 or early1945, and the order palette relatively compact and colourful.

Expect turnip-headed infantry, tanks with 2D wheels and tracks, and explosions that resemble giant spectral meringues. Anticipate too, narrow squeaks, unexpected twists, and cliffhangers aplenty.

As usual, the right to shepherd the game’s weightiest units will be restricted to airlifters – the good eggs who keep the site going through subscriptions. Most of the units available to unenbrowned Comment Commanders will be infantry squads, support teams, and APCs.

While previous Combat Mission experience is by no means vital, as the very first Combat Mission is A) one of the finest wargames ever made, B) demo-blessed, and C) currently a piffling £3 on GOG, there’s really no good reason why you should enter the fray on Friday totally green.
