Chastened Charioteers

The following two sentences appear connected but aren’t. I’m rather impressed by Tryphon 104, a new, twenty-turn recreation of the Second Servile War for Wars Across The World. I spent a portion of yesterday evening overseeing charioteers.

While the refreshingly challenging (from the Roman side at least – I’ve not tried playing as Salvius) £2.50 Tryphon does feature cavalry units and heavy siege weapons, it doesn’t appear to let you bolster armies with chariots or charioteers.

Armored Brigade II, on the other hand, does boast Charioteers, and thanks to a recent update – an update that also introduced AI suppression fire, and a clutch of new Bundeswehr infantry formations – the heavyweight British export no longer has to endure the indignity of a placeholder model.

Part of a colourful Sixties Finnish TO&E that includes StuGs and Comets, Charioteers are essentially up-gunned Cromwells. The implanted Ordnance QF 20 pounder allows them to make short work of most Khrushchev-era Soviet AFVs, but – as I discovered last night – not all. Next time I run into a trio of lumbering T-10s in AB2, I’ll be treating them with much more respect.

Talking of chariots, the two Ancient Arenas: Chariots forums are desperately in need of SITREPs at the moment. Deprived of news for the best part of a year, it’s little wonder some initially excited Qvadriga fans have gone a bit Spartacus.

  1. I played Tryphon and won decisively as the Slaves. Besieging every city you can is key. A nice lunch hour scenario. Hope they eventually do the Spartacus Revolt, completing the Servile War trifecta.
